Lap Comparison

Lap comparison is one of TrackOut's most powerful features. By overlaying multiple laps on every chart, you can see exactly where and why one lap is faster than another.

Selecting laps

After uploading or loading a session, you will see a list of all laps with their lap times. Click on any lap to select it for analysis. You can select up to 4 laps to compare simultaneously.

The first lap you select becomes the reference lap for delta time calculations. All other selected laps are compared against it.

Color coding

Each selected lap is assigned a distinct color for easy identification across all charts:

PositionColorRole
Lap 1BlueReference lap
Lap 2RedComparison
Lap 3GreenComparison
Lap 4AmberComparison

These colors are consistent across the track map, speed chart, G-force chart, delta trace, and braking zone table.

Best lap indicator

The fastest valid lap in the session is automatically highlighted with a green badge in the lap list. This makes it easy to spot your best performance without scanning through all the lap times.

Delta time analysis

When comparing laps, the Delta Trace chart shows cumulative time gained or lost versus the reference lap (the first selected lap). The delta value is plotted against track distance so you can see exactly where time is being gained or lost.

Reading the delta trace

  • Negative delta -- You are ahead of the reference lap at this point on track
  • Positive delta -- You are behind the reference lap at this point
  • Steep downward slope -- A section where you are gaining significant time
  • Steep upward slope -- A section where you are losing significant time
  • Flat sections -- Similar performance to the reference lap

How to use delta analysis

Focus on the sections with the steepest slopes. These are where the biggest differences between laps occur and represent your highest-priority areas for improvement.

Best practices

  • Compare your fastest lap against an average lap to find consistency gaps
  • Compare two fast laps to understand what makes one slightly better
  • Pay attention to corner entry speeds -- small differences compound into large time gains
  • Use the delta trace alongside the track map to connect time differences to specific corners
